Hello!
In this post we will show you how you can manage the spam comments on your website without tweaking the code.
All of us who manage a website or blog knows what a menace are spam comments. These spam can easily ruin the experience of your visitors and may also degrade your ranking in search engines.
So, it’s always a good idea to manage spam on your website. Many plugins are available both paid and free which can do the spam management for your.
Next option is that you tweak the code to avoid spams. But, this can be tricky for many people who are not very tech savvy.
Here first we will give you a no plugin no coding option to manage the spam.
WordPress gives you a feature which you can use to manage the spams. We are also using the same for our website.
Let’s see how you can manage the spam without coding or installing a plugin.
- Login to the Admin dashboard of your WordPress site.
- Once inside the Dashboard . Go to Settings > Discussion
- In the “Discussion Settings” page scroll down to section “Before a comment appears”. Refer image below.
- For our website we have checked on “Comments must be manually approved”. But you can leave it unchecked if you are getting lot of permissible comments.
- Next section is “Comment Moderation”. If you don’t want to manually approve each comment you can put keywords here. If a comment contains any of the keywords mentioned here it will be withheld for moderation.
- Next section is “Comment Blacklist”. In this section you can put keywords which you are sure that they are not related to your site contents. They will be automatically sent to “Trash”.
Note:- If you want to see the keywords we use for blacklist checkout the bonus section below.
Using Captcha:-
Another great option to restrict spam is to enable a captcha plugin which will help in identifying if it’s a bot or human which is trying to put a comment. We have seen a drastic drop in spam after installing captcha plugin . Basically it detects the actions of the users and based on that make a decision to allow or deny a user login. Since many of these plugins are using google’s recaptcha technology in background so they are quite efficient in distinguishing bots from humans. You can select the plugin which suits you from this wordpress captcha plugin page. Just follow the instructions of plugin installation and do the settings as per your requirement. We are using “Google Captcha (reCAPTCHA) by BestWebSoft” and it’s very easy to manage.
Bonus:-
Below is the list of keywords we use to blacklist. There is no one size that fits all so, you are free to modify the list as per your requirement. This simple strategy will help you filter majority of the spams coming to your site. You can keep on updating the list as the spammers get innovative with keywords 🙂
It’s good idea to not delete the comments blindly and once in a while check in “Trash” that no legitimate comment went there.
